Excerpts

[8] Why Repent For Karmic Obstacles?

Why repent for karmic obstacles? A sūtra says, ‘Violating with one duṣkṛta, like for the Four Heavenly Kings’ lifespan of five hundred years, is the fall within niraya [i.e. hell].’

A duṣkṛta is a small transgression, yet obtaining this retribution, moreover with heavy transgressions? Their retributions are difficult to speak of.

Now, myself and others, within that of everyday use, with each move and each action, constantly defy the precepts and rules. With each meal eaten and each drop of water drunk, we frequently violate Śīla [i.e. precepts].

In one day, that violated, likewise should be immeasurable, moreover if lifelong passing through kalpas, of those arisen transgressions? They are even more unspeakable!

Moreover, with the Five Precepts, speaking of them, of ten persons, nine violate them, with few revealing and many hiding this.

The Five Precepts are named as Upāsaka Precepts, yet I am not complete with them, much less, of the Śrāmaṇera, Bhikṣu, Bodhisattva and other precepts, there is moreover no need to speak of them.

When asked for that name, then saying I am a Bhikṣu. When asked for that truth, then yet to be adequate as an Upāsaka, how can I not be ashamed?

We should know that if the Buddha’s precepts are not received, then so be it. If received, then they must not be broken and violated. If not violated, then so be it. If violated, then in the end, we will definitely fall.

If not with self-sympathy and sympathy for others, for self-harming and harming of others, with deeds and words together sincere, speaking and weeping together humbly, universally for sentient beings, begging for pity and seeking repentance, then for a thousand lives through ten thousand kalpas, from evil retributions, how can there be escape?

This is for giving rise to the Bodhi Mind, the eighth cause and condition.
