[4] Why Be Mindful Of Our Benefactors’ Kindness? 云何念施主恩?

云何念施主恩?谓我等今者日用所资,并非己有,三时粥饭,四季衣裳,疾病所须,身口所费,此皆出自他力,将为我用。

Why be mindful of our benefactors’ kindness? Speaking of myself and others now, those in daily life used, those resources, they are really not by ourselves having them. The porridge and rice at three times a day, four seasons’ clothing, those needed for sicknesses, and those by the body and mouth consumed, all these originating from others’ efforts, are taken for my use.

彼则竭力躬耕,尚难糊口;我则安坐受食,犹不称心。

Others then do their utmost to till the fields, but are still with difficulties filling their mouths. I then, comfortably sitting and receiving food, am still not satisfied.

彼则纺织不已,犹自艰难;我于安服有馀,宁知爱惜?

Others then spin and weave without ceasing, but are still with hardship. I then, being comfortably dressed with extra clothing, how can I know to cherish them?

彼则荜门蓬户,扰攘终身;我则广宇闲庭,优悠卒岁。

Others then live in thatched houses with bamboo doors [i.e. poor and humble dwellings], bustling lifelong. I then, live in a vast house with a quiet court, with leisure and comfort to the end of my years.

以彼劳而供我逸,于心安乎?将他利而润己身,于理顺乎?

With others’ toiling then providing for my ease, in my mind, how can there be peace? To use others’ gains, then benefitting my body, how is this with reason agreeable?

自非悲智双运,福慧二严,檀信沾恩,众生受赐,则粒米寸丝,酬偿有分,恶报宁逃?

If not personally with compassion and wisdom both used, with blessings and wisdom both adorning, so that generous devotees can receive kindness, and sentient beings can receive gifts, then with even a grain of rice or a cùn of thread, with repayment having a part, of evil retributions, how can they be escaped from?

是为发菩提心第四因缘也。

This is for giving rise to the Bodhi Mind, the fourth cause and condition.
