Question: If one recognises a mistake done and sincerely repents, is one forgiven then?
Answer: ‘Forgiven’ by who? (The enlightened ones, and even the natural law of karma do no bear any grudges.) If there is another with harm done to, has that person forgiven? If not, the evil karmas created are obviously still unresolved.
However, even after been forgiven by that person, if the evil karmas are still not dissolved totally, there will still be some repercussions. For example, having one’s reputation damaged. Repentance should continue then, in thought, word and deed.
And very importantly, as many forget and/or neglect, there should be remedial actions to undo and make up for the mistake. For example, personally apologise to the person harmed and have actual actions to reverse all the harms done, best you can.
