Question: How can we attain the magnificent appearance of the Buddha?
Answer: According to the Sūtra Of Earth Treasury Bodhisattva’s Fundamental Vows《地藏菩萨本愿经》, as taught by Śākyamuni Buddha (释迦牟尼佛) below, there must be giving rise to the long-term vow with related practices (based on all kinds of skilful means) to guide all beings to the complete liberation of Buddhahood. This means that those with enduring compassionate aspiration and relevant actions to free all from suffering will karmically come to resemble the Buddhas.
文殊师利，是地藏菩萨摩诃萨，于过去久远不可说不可说劫前，身为大长者子。
Mañjuśrī, this Earth Treasury Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva, in past long [and] distant unspeakably unspeakable kalpas before, [was] as [a] Great Elder’s Son.
时世有佛，号曰师子奋迅具足万行如来。
Then, [the] world had [a] Buddha, named Lion [Who] Strove [To] Swiftly Complete Ten Thousand Practices Thus Come [One].
时长者子，见佛相好，千福庄严。因问彼佛：『作何行愿，而得此相？』
Then, [the] Elder’s Son, saw [the] Buddha’s form’s excellences, [with a] thousand blessings’ adornments. Because [of these, he] asked that Buddha, “[With the] making [of] what vow [and] practices, then attains these forms?”
时师子奋迅具足万行如来，告长者子：『欲证此身，当须久远度脱一切受苦众生。』
Then, Lion [Who] Strove [To] Swiftly Complete Ten Thousand Practices Thus Come [One] told [the] Elder’s Son, “[If] desiring [to] realise this body, [there] must [be] long [and] distant delivering [and] liberating [of] all suffering sentient beings.”
文殊师利！时长者子，因发愿言：『我今尽未来际，不可计劫，为是罪苦六道众生，广设方便，尽令解脱，而我自身，方成佛道。』
Mañjuśrī! Then, [the] Elder’s Son, because [of this], gave rise [to the] vow, saying, “I now, exhausting [the] future’s limit, [for] incalculable kalpas, for these six paths’ sentient beings [with] transgressions suffering, [will] widely establish skilful [means, to] completely enable [them to be] liberated. Then will I myself, accomplish [the] Buddha path.”
以是于彼佛前，立斯大愿，于今百千万亿那由他，不可说劫，尚为菩萨。
With this, at that Buddha, before [him, he] established this great vow, [and] until now, [for a] thousand million nayutas [of] unspeakable kalpas, [is] still as [a] Bodhisattva.
Question: What is the swiftest way to attain the majestic forms of the Buddha?
Answer: According to Āmítuófó’s (阿弥陀佛: Amitā[bha] Buddha) Twenty-First Vow Of Each Complete With Thirty-Two Forms (第二十一：各具三十二相愿) in the Immeasurable Life Sūtra《无量寿经》,
设我得佛，国中天人，不悉成满三十二大人相者，不取正觉。
If I attain Buddhahood, [should] heavenly [and] human [beings] within [my] land, not all [be] those accomplished fully [with the] thirty-two great human’s forms, [I shall] not obtain Right Awakening.
This means that all who reach Āmítuófó’s Pure Land (净土), as soon as by the end of this life, will have the complete attributes of all Buddhas’ forms in advance, as empowered by him, to inspire us to strive towards Buddhahood. This is also made possible as there will be complete inspiration to give rise to the perfect Bodhi Mind (菩提心: Bodhicitta) to walk the Bodhisattva path there and beyond. (This Bodhi Mind includes the pure vow to guide one and all to Buddhahood.)
