譬如有人卒患脊偻请医疗之,医以酥涂,上下着板,用力痛压,不觉双目一时并出。
For example, there was a person who suddenly became a hunchback, who invited a doctor to heal him. The doctor, with ghee applied, and with his above and below attached with boards, used strength to painfully press them, not aware that both of his eyes at once together came out.
世间愚人亦复如是,为修福故,治生估贩作诸非法,其事虽成利不补害,将来之世入于地狱,喻双目出。
The world’s foolish people are likewise thus, for cultivating ‘blessings’ thus, earning a living with trading and selling, doing all that is not legal. These matters, although accomplishing benefits, do not make up for their harms. In lives of the future, with entering of the hells, analogous to having both eyes coming out.
[Note: While there are the foolish who deludedly think they have remedies for physical and mental suffering, there are also the foolish who have blind faith in them, by not learning and enquiring on their methods adequately. Some methods might seem to offer limited benefits in the short term, but lead to much more harms in the long term.]
