譬如昔日有二小儿入河遨戏，于此水底得一把毛，一小儿言：「此是仙须。」
For example, in past days, there were two small boys entering a river to play. At this water’s bottom getting a handful of hair, a small boy said, ‘This is a sage’s beard.’
一小儿言：「此是罴毛。」
A small boy said, ‘This is a brown bear’s fur.’
尔时河边有一仙人，此二小儿诤之不已，诣彼仙所决其所疑。
At that time, the riverside had a ‘sage’. As these two small boys were disputing endlessly, they arrived at that ‘sage’s place to resolve their doubts.
而彼仙人寻即取米及胡麻子，口中含嚼吐着掌中，语小儿言：「我掌中者似孔雀屎。」
Then, that ‘sage’ immediately obtained rice and sesame seeds, within his mouth held, chewed and spat them, to be received within his palm. Speaking to the small boys, saying, ‘That within my palm resembles peacock excrement.’
而此仙人不答他问，人皆知之。
Then, as this ‘sage’ did not answer their question, people all knew this.
世间愚人亦复如是，说法之时戏论诸法不答正理，如彼仙人不答所问，为一切人之所嗤笑，浮漫虚说亦复如是。
The world’s foolish people are likewise thus, when speaking the Dharma, with frivolous discussions on all dharmas, not answering with the right principles, like that ‘sage’ not answering that asked, by all people as that sneered at, they are likewise thus.
[Note: Those not wise are already foolish, while those not wise pretending to be wise are doubly foolish, with those mistaking their nonsensical so-called ‘teachings’ to be wise being triply foolish. Such ‘teachings’ not only do not address essential issues, they distract others from them, which can be as spiritually disingenuous as dangerous.]
