For example, five persons together bought a servant. Among then, a person spoke to this servant, saying, ‘For me wash my clothes.’
Next, there was a person, who again said, ‘Wash my clothes.’
The servant said to that next person, ‘I will first for that person wash.’
The latter angrily said, ‘As I, together with the previous person, together bought you, why are you only for him washing thus?’
Then whipping him ten times, thus with the five persons each beating him ten times.
The five aggregates are likewise thus, with afflictions as causes and conditions composing this body. And these five aggregates are constantly with birth, ageing, sickness, death, immeasurable suffering and afflictions beating and whipping sentient beings.
[Note 1: The five aggregates (五蕴) are (i) form (色), (ii) feelings (受), (iii) perception (想), (iv) mental formation (行) and (v) consciousness (识).]
[Note 2: When the five aggregates gather and are attached to, this creates the illusion of self (我), with this as the root of afflictions. Afflictions that arise, when attached to, then further fortify the illusion of self.
Despite this ‘self’ being with the five aggregates, the latter ‘sabotage’ the first with much suffering, that occur in this life (between birth and death), and recur from life to life (in many rebirths and ‘redeaths’).]
