昔时有人于众人中，叹己父德而作是言：「我父慈仁不害不盗，直作实语兼行布施。」
When in the past, there was a person within a crowd of people, praising his own father’s virtues, then making this statement, ‘My father is with loving-kindness and benevolence, who does not harm, and does not steal, directly speaking true words, he also practises generosity.’
时有愚人闻其此语便作是念言：「我父德行复过汝父。」
Then, there was a foolish person, who heard these words of his, then having this thought, saying, ‘My father’s virtuous practices surpass your father’s.’
诸人问言：「有何德行请道其事？」
Many people asked, saying, ‘He has what virtuous practices? Please speak of his practices.‘
愚人答曰：「我父小来断绝淫欲初无染污。」
The foolish person replied, ‘My father, since small, having severed lustful desires in the beginning, is without defilements.‘
众人语言：「若断淫欲，云何生汝？」深为时人之所怪笑。
The crowd of people spoke, saying, ‘If he has severed lustful desires, how were you born?‘ He was deeply by the people at that time sneered at.
犹如世间无智之流，欲赞人德不识其实，反致毁呰，如彼愚者，意好叹父言成过失，此亦如是。
This is similar to the world’s group of people without wisdom, who desire to praise a person’s virtues, but does not recognise him truly, instead denigrating him. They are like that foolish person, with the desire to well praise his father’s, with his words becoming faults, this is likewise thus.
[Note: Just as we should not praise others, whom we do not really understand well, with the praising of whom might become insulting instead, likewise, we should not praise ourselves, when we do not really understand ourselves well. In fact, self-praising is almost always arrogant, unless non-self has been realised. Self-praise is thus mostly blameworthy, the opposite of the praiseworthy. To self-praise is then to self-insult.]
