In the past, there was a foolish person, with his head above without hair. Then, there was a person, with pears hitting his head, and even doing so, twice, thrice, completely injuring and breaking it. Then, this foolish person silently endured it, not knowing to avoid and leave.

A bystander, seeing this already, then said these words, ‘Why not avoid and leave? Why thus stand and receive hitting, to cause your head to be broken?’

The foolish person replied, saying, ‘Like those persons arrogant, relying on their strength, ignorant without wisdom, seeing my head above without hair, saying it is a rock, he thereupon with pears hit my head and broke it.’

The bystander said these words, ‘As you are personally ignorant, how can you name that person, with him as ignorant? You, if are not ignorant, why are you by him, the one who is hit, and even with your head broken, not know to escape?’

Bhikṣus likewise thus, who are not able to have cultivation of faith, precepts, hearing and wisdom, only complete with ‘majestic conduct’, with it attracting benefits and gain, are like that foolish person, by another hitting his head, not knowing to avoid and leave, and even injuring and breaking it, instead saying the other person is ignorant, these Bhikṣus are likewise thus.

[Note: The ignorant lacking adequately profound Dharma practice might strive to keep up with superficial appearances of being prim and proper, only for worldly advantages like offerings and wealth. (The bald person can represent a shaven monastic too.) This is while possibly subjecting themselves to needless pain, suffering fools and even ridicule, perhaps by those who know better too. They might assume those subjecting them to the above problems are arrogant and ignorant, when they are worse off, with even greater arrogance and ignorance for thinking so, while not reflecting upon their own faults.]
