[92] The Parable Of The Small Child Getting Joy Pills From The Sūtra Of A Hundred Parables《百喻经》之小儿得欢喜丸喻

Generated by Copilot

昔有一乳母抱儿涉路,行道疲极眠睡不觉。

In the past, there was a wet nurse, who embraced a child and set off on the road. Travelling on a path with weariness extreme, she became sleepy and unconscious.

时有一人持欢喜丸授与小儿,小儿得已贪其美味不顾身物,此人即时解其钳鏁璎珞衣物都尽持去。

Then, there was a person holding joy pills, who gave them to the small child. The small child, getting them already, greedy for their delicious taste, did not have regard for his body’s objects. This person immediately loosened his jewellery and necklace, with his clothing all completely grasped away.

比丘亦尔,乐在众务愦閙之处,贪少利养为烦恼贼夺其功德戒宝璎珞,如彼小儿贪少味故一切所有贼尽持去。

Bhikṣus are likewise thus, with joy in places of many affairs and clamour, greedy for a little profit and gain, by afflictions’ thieves snatching away their meritorious virtues and precepts’ treasure necklaces, they are like that small child greedy for a little taste, thus with all that he had by the thief completely grasped away.

[Note 1: There should not be unchecked greed for much or even little pleasures of the senses (which might hence grow to become much), while compromising moral integrity and already limited meritorious virtues.]

[Note 2: Already with limited time, we should also not let ourselves be constantly distracted and overwhelmed by worldly busyness, when there should be more focus on actual Dharma learning and practice.]
