Ten Motivations From Suffering

[1] Humility

May your suffering (苦) motivate you
to keep being humble (谦虚),
as you might have much more evil karmas (恶业).

[2] Diligence

May your suffering motivate you
to practise the Dharma (法) more diligently (精进),
in avoiding of evil and doing of good (止恶行善).

[3] Repentance

May your suffering motivate you
to keep repenting (忏悔) for your evil karmas,
by acknowledging your past and present transgressions (罪).

[4] Remedial Actions

May your suffering motivate you
to have corrective actions (改过) immediately,
to (undo and) make up for your mistakes (过失) best you can.

[5] Precepts

May your suffering motivate you
to uphold the precepts (持戒) more strictly,
to prevent more transgressions, which cause more suffering.

[6] Four Noble Truths

May your suffering motivate you
to realise the Four Noble Truths (四圣谛)
(with its Noble Eightfold Path [八正道]),
for self-liberation (自了).

[7] Empathy

May your suffering motivate you
to empathise (怜悯) with others suffering too,
to grow in compassion (慈悲) for all.

[8] Bodhi Mind

May your suffering motivate you
to give rise to the Bodhi Mind (菩提心),
to help one and all overcome suffering totally.

[9] Four Great Vows

May your suffering motivate you
to give rise to the Four Great Vows (四弘誓愿),
to accomplish self-liberation and liberation of others (自了了他).

[10] Sincerity

May your suffering motivate you
to be mindful of Āmítuófó (阿弥陀佛) sincerely,
to reach his Pure Land (净土), for the swiftest progress to Buddhahood (佛果).
