After so many films in the franchise, the ‘eternalistic’ problem with the Ghostbusters’ universe is still there. What is supposed to happen to the ghosts trapped in the single containment unit? Are they meant to be imprisoned forever? If not, why are they not reformed or delivered to a better state of existence, or even to Āmítuófó’s (阿弥陀佛) Pure Land (净土) for liberation, but demonised for ‘all’ time in an increasingly claustrophobic space?
Is it not like an Uninterrupted Hell of sorts? How karmically fair can this be? And if they are not jailed indefinitely, they will break free eventually, which they have kind of done repeatedly already. Is this not reminiscent of the ‘vanquishing demons to hell’ problem, only with them freeing themselves to wreak havoc in the rounds of rebirth again? How about more transformative empathy for those haunting and haunted?
When a junior ghostbuster was thinking about pulling the trigger on a ghost upon being urged to ‘Blast it!’, the ghost glared back and quizzed, ‘It?’ Finally, in a one-word retort, is some self-humanisation ending unchecked malevolent objectification of ghosts. They are not all malevolent. Also, the more malevolent they are, the more is guidance needed by them. Enough zapping and trapping… mere ‘busting’. High time to literally ‘deliver’ real results!
