What Is A High, Broad And Big Bed? 何为高广大床?

Question: In the Eight Precepts (八戒), is the Seventh Precept to abstain from using ‘high, broad and big (chairs and) beds’ (不坐高广大床) for a day and night. What defines that ‘high, broad and big’?

Answer: It is not so much that a bed or seat being high, broad and big definitely being forbidden, but that since ancient high (tall), broad and big beds and seats tend to be extra cushy and luxuriously indulgent, they should be avoided to avoid indulgence in sense pleasures and laxity.

If a modern bed or seat is high, broad and big, but not really very cushy, as in the case of many good firm mattresses nowadays, they can be used. When sleeping and sitting, be mindful not to roll and lean around too much, by keeping to one side. If so, even if high, broad and big, they are not used in a high, broad and big way.
