often explain them, to enable her to give rise to the joyful mind,

(Reply Letter To A Certain Yǒngjiā Layperson And His Brother)
When in leisure without other matters, from the beginning to the end, skilfully inspire and state supreme principles, to enable their minds to know about having what is right and wrong, that can and cannot be done. Then, with their minds not knowingly and not aware, with gradual polishing and gradual dyeing, they are then by this transformed. (于闲暇无事时,委曲宛转,开陈至理,令其心知有是非可否。则心识不知不觉,渐摩渐染而为转变。)
Reaching when their natures of foolishness and arrogance arise and appear, they can then be remedied, then with supreme principles’ famous sayings, with peaceful harmony and even-mindedness, with these remedying them. (至其愚傲之性发现时,可对治,则以至理名言,和气平心以对治之。)
Otherwise, allow him or her to be, totally setting them aside, taking no notice of them. Waiting for their anger to dissipate, then again with even-mindedness and peaceful harmony, discussing on their crookedness and straightness (i.e. wrong and right, evil and good). Gradually over time, then accordingly, they will then transform. (否则任伊,一概置之不理。待其气消,再以平心和气,论其曲直,久之则随之而化。)
