昔有工匠师，为王作务不堪其苦，诈言眼盲便得脱苦。
In the past, there was an artisan master, for the King working. When he could not bear its suffering, he lied by saying his eyes were blinded, then getting liberation from his suffering.
有余作师闻之，便欲自坏其目用避苦役。
There were other working masters who heard this, then desiring to personally destroy their eyes, using this to avoid their forced labour.
有人语言：「汝何以自毁？徒受其苦。」
There was a person who said, ‘Why are you with self-destruction, in vain receiving this suffering?’
如是愚人为世人所笑。凡夫之人亦复如是，为少名誉及以利养，便故妄语毁坏净戒，身死命终堕三恶道，如彼愚人为少利故自坏其目。
Thus, these foolish persons were by the world’s people as those laughed at. Of ordinary beings’ people, they are likewise thus, for a little fame and with profit and gain, then intentionally having false speech, destroying the pure precepts. When their bodies die at life’s end, falling into the three evil paths, they are like those foolish persons, for little benefits thus personally destroying their eyes.
[Note 1: The three evil paths (三恶道) are the (i) hell-beings’ path (地狱道), (ii) hungry ghosts’ path (饿鬼道) and (iii) animals’ path (畜生道).]
[Note 2: There should never be compromising of moral integrity for little or even much worldly benefits. To do so is to be spiritually short-sighted, leading to suffering later in this life or in future lives.]
