[88] The Parable Of The Macaque’s Handful Of Beans From The Sūtra Of A Hundred Parables《百喻经》之猕猴把豆喻

昔有一猕猴,持一把豆,误落一豆在地,便舍手中豆欲觅其一,未得一豆先所舍者鸡鸭食尽。

In the past, there was a macaque, holding a handful of beans, by mistake dropping one bean on the ground, then giving up the beans within his hand, desiring to seek that one. Yet to get the one bean, first with those given up by chickens and ducks completely eaten.

凡夫出家亦复如是,初毁一戒而不能悔,以不悔故放逸滋蔓一切都舍,如彼猕猴失其一豆一切都弃。

Ordinary beings who have left the household life are likewise thus, in the beginning destroying one precept, yet not able to repent, with not repenting thus, with heedlessness growing and spreading, then with all precepts given up, they are like that macaque losing that one bean, then with all beans abandoned.

[Note 1: There should be immediate repentance for each precept broken, with immediate recommitment to uphold it better. With mindfulness thus, this is how all the precepts will be as completely intact as possible, and as soon as possible, from moment to moment.]

[Note 2: As all the precepts are interconnected and thus important, there should not be giving up of all other precepts in the moment just because one was broken. Beginners should not have unrealistic perfectionism by expecting each precept to be perfectly observed one by one before observing the other precepts well.]
