In the past, there was a group of thieves together doing robbery, with the much obtained wealth and property, then together dividing them equally, with them as their parts. Only having Deer Park’s kambala, with its colour not pure and good, with it as an inferior part, given to that most lowly one.
[Note 1: Kambala (钦婆罗) is clothing woven from fine wool, usually worn by those of external paths.]
That lowly one who got it was resentful, crying out that it was a great loss, arriving at a city to sell it.
Many of those honoured elders, with much more gave than its value. As one person, with that gotten many times more than all of his companions, then thus joyfully jumped with pleasure ‘immeasurable’.
Similar to the world’s people who do not know if giving has rewards or no rewards, then practising little giving, when attaining birth in the heavens above, receiving ‘immeasurable’ joy, they are then even more regretful, regretting for not having made vaster giving.
Like the kambala later getting greater value, thus giving rise to joy, giving is likewise thus, with little done is much attained. Thereupon with personal gladness, later regretting not with even more done.
[Note 2: Even if what given seems little or insignificant at first, as long as there is proper giving, in the spirit of genuine generosity, the karmic rewards will ‘appreciate’ to be more than that given. (Likewise, unrepented evils done can ‘appreciate’ in karmic retribution over time too.)]
[Note 3: It is with birth in the Western Pure Land Of Ultimate Bliss (西方极乐世界) that there is truly immeasurable spiritual bliss and physical happiness, leading to those of Buddhahood (佛果). This is while even great heavenly joy is impermanent and unsubstantial. Upon depletion of the good karmas (善业) for heavenly rebirth, there can be fall to a lower path too.]
