昔有一女人，极患眼痛，有知识女人问言：「汝眼痛耶？」
In the past, there was a woman, who suffered extremely with her eyes having pain. There was a ‘knowledgeable’ woman who asked, saying, ‘Do your eyes have pain?’
答言：「眼痛。」
She replied, saying, ‘My eyes have pain.’
彼女复言：「有眼必痛，我虽未痛并欲挑眼恐其后痛。」
That woman replied, saying, ‘Having eyes, there will definitely be pain. I, although yet to have pain, also desire to tear out my eyes, fearing that they will later have pain.’
傍人语言：「眼若在者或痛不痛，眼若无者终身长痛。」
A bystander said, ‘Those, if with eyes existing might have pain or no pain. Those, if without eyes will have lifelong pain.’
凡愚之人亦复如是，闻富贵者衰患之本，畏不布施恐后得报，财物殷溢重受苦恼。
Of people ordinary and foolish, they are likewise thus. Hearing that wealth and honour are the ‘roots’ of decline and suffering, with fear not giving, afraid of later getting ‘retribution’, with wealth and property abundantly overflowing, having heavy receiving of suffering and afflictions.
有人语言：「汝若施者或苦或乐，若不施者贫穷大苦。」
There was a person who said, ‘If you are those giving, you might have suffering or joy. If you are those not giving, you will have poverty’s great suffering.’
如彼女人，不忍近痛便欲去眼，乃为长痛。
Like that woman, not bearing with immediate [short-term] pain, then desiring to remove her eyes, thus being with long-term pain.
[Note: Money and status are not the true roots of evil or suffering, while greed for them and attachment to them are the actual roots. It is ignorance of how to use worldly blessings well that creates suffering, not the blessings themselves. Thus, those who practise generosity, who will karmically gain wealth, if also having wisdom, will not only not have suffering, they will have joy.]
