昔有父子与伴共行,其子入林为熊所啮,爪坏身体,困急出林还至伴边。
In the past, there was a father with his son as companions together travelling. His son entered a forest and was by a bear that bitten, with claws injuring his body. With difficulties urgently, he exited the forest and returned to his companion’s side.
父见其子身体伤坏,怪问之言:「汝今何故被此疮害?」
The father, seeing the son’s body injured, finding it strange, asked him, saying, ‘You are now for what reason covered with these wounds?’
子报父言:「有一种物,身毛躭毵来毁害我。」
The son replied to the father, saying, ‘There is a kind of animal, with a body of extremely long hair, who came to harm me.’
父执弓箭往到林间,见一仙人,毛发深长,便欲射之。
The father, holding a bow and arrow, went to the forest. Seeing a sage, with hair thick and long, he then desired to shoot him.
傍人语言:「何故射之?此人无害,当治有过。」
A bystander said, ‘For what reason are you shooting him? This person is harmless. You should punish the one who has fault.’
世间愚人亦复如是,为彼虽着法服无道行者之所骂辱,而滥害良善有德之人,喻如彼父熊伤其子而抂加神仙。
The world’s foolish people are likewise thus, by those although wearing Dharma robes but without the path’s practice, as those scolded and insulted, and with indiscriminate harm of people who are good and have virtue. This is analogous to that father, with a bear injuring his son, then with unjust harm of a divine sage.
[Note: Just as it is possible for those wearing robes to not be as virtuous as expected, those not wearing robes can be more virtuous than expected. Therefore, there should be careful and in-depth seeking of the causes of problems, so as to address them properly, instead of having careless and superficial assumptions, which can create more problems for oneself and others.]
