Question: How should our family members and friends, and even strangers now and beyond remember us after our deaths?
Answer: We should strive to be remembered, not out of egotism for ourselves, but out of compassion for others. For this to be possible, we should practise the Buddha’s teachings best we can in this life, so that we can become excellent examples of morality and such. May we inspire as many as possible, with how the Dharma can be joyfully actualised for the welfare of one and all.
If there is nothing spiritually worthy of remembrance about our lives, this might mean we were of little crucial significance in others’ lives. May we be remembered more for our generosity over greed (if any), more for our compassion over hatred (if any), and wisdom over delusion (if any). This is how we will be able to leave a praiseworthy and lasting legacy for those surviving us.
