昔边国人不识于驴，闻他说言驴乳甚美，都无识者。
In the past, a border country’s people did not have understanding of donkeys. Hearing others say donkey milk is extremely delicious, with all without those understanding it.
尔时诸人得一父驴，欲构其乳，诤共捉之，其中有捉头者、有捉耳者、有捉尾者、有捉脚者，复有捉器者，各欲先得于前饮之。
At that time, all people got a male donkey, desiring to form its milk. Disputing together and clutching it, within them having those clutching the head, those clutching the ears, those clutching the tail, those clutching the legs, also having those clutching the genitals, with each desiring to first get to the front to drink it.
中捉驴根谓呼是乳，即便构之望得其乳。
One within, clutching the donkey’s male organ, cried out that it is the ‘udder’, immediately with the hope of forming and getting its milk.
众人疲厌都无所得，徒自劳苦空无所获，为一切世人之所嗤笑。
All the people became weary, all without that gotten, in vain toiling with suffering, empty without that obtained, by all the world’s people as those sneered at.
外道凡夫亦复如是，闻说于道不应求处，妄生想念，起种种邪见，裸形自饿投岩赴火，以是邪见堕于恶道，如彼愚人妄求于乳。
External paths’ ordinary beings are likewise thus. Hearing speaking of the path, at places where there should not be seeking of it, falsely giving rise to thoughts, raising all kinds of evil views. With naked forms, self-starving, throwing themselves off cliffs and going into fires, with these evil views falling into evil paths, they are like those foolish persons with false seeking of the ‘udder’.
[Note: There should be learning for practising of the right path to liberation at the right places via the right teachers. Otherwise, with personal and/or others’ deluded speculations, there might be extreme ascetic practices from external paths learnt and practised, that not only lead away from liberation, but more deeply into the cycle of birth and death too.]
