[71] The Parable Of Because Of Two Wives Thus Losing His Two Eyes From The Sūtra Of A Hundred Parables《百喻经》之为二妇故丧其两目喻

昔有一人娉取二妇,若近其一,为一所瞋。

In the past, there was a person who married to obtain two wives. If approaching the first, it would make that other one angry.

不能裁断,便在二妇中间正身仰卧。

Not able to consider and decide upon one, he then, at the two wives’ in between, straightened his body, lying supine.

值天大雨屋舍霖漏,水土俱下堕其眼中,以先有要不敢起避,遂令二目俱失其明。

Encountering a day with great rain, the house, with copious raining leaked, with water and mud together falling down within his eyes. With his prior agreement, he did not dare to arise for avoiding them, thereupon causing his two eyes to together lose their sight.

世间凡夫亦复如是,亲近邪友习行非法,造作结业堕三恶道,长处生死丧智慧眼,如彼愚夫为其二妇故二眼俱失。

The world’s ordinary beings are likewise thus, getting close to evil friends, practising practices that are not of the Dharma, creating fettering karmas, falling into the three evil paths, long dwelling in the cycle of birth and death, and losing wisdom’s eye, like that foolish husband, because of his two wives thus, with his two eyes completely lost.

[Note: There should not be, for juggling between many trivial worldly benefits to maintain them out of greed, forsaking the wise course of action (e.g. learning and practising the Right Dharma (正法) from good-knowing friends (善知识). Otherwise, not only will the worldly benefits be lost soon, there will be no spiritual benefits from liberation attained too.]
