How To Purify ‘The Cursed Land’?

In many Thai supernatural movies, some monks usually eventually save the day from malevolent ghostly encounters. However, this horror story tells of disturbances by (otherwise neither innately good or evil) djinns, who are believed to be invisible spirits, who can appear in the form of humans or animals (to help or harm). They are supposed to be more primeval, not the usual ghosts or wandering spirits of the deceased. Different religions will classify such beings differently though.

When a ‘kind of’ Buddhist father and daughter supposedly encounter djinns in their house and approach a Buddhist monk for house blessing (and cleansing), he apprehensively says that they are beyond his spiritual jurisdiction, because djinns operate in another system. This is when, surprisingly, Buddhist solutions are portrayed to as if be unworkable? But how can there be a limit to the efficacy of the Buddha’s fully awakened teachings, which cover the whole universe?

Of course, this is a fictitious tale. In the actual Buddhist teachings, the Buddha, who is an unsurpassable Teacher Of Humans And Gods (人天教主), is recorded to be able to subdue even Māra (摩罗), the greatest evil one in the world system, along with all his minions, his ‘demonic children and grandchildren’ (魔子魔孙). How can it be then, that the Buddha, with his supreme supernormal powers, compassion, wisdom and skilful means, cannot subdue ‘mere’ spirit beings?

The Buddha was even able to overpower Maha Brahma (大梵天), a heavenly being who mistook himself to be the creator of the world, proving to him that he was not as powerful as he deludedly imagined. Such were recorded among the Buddha’s great spiritual and physical victories. Thus, if what occurred in the tale did happen, sincere mindfulness of the Buddha (念佛) to connect to him for help will do to solve the problem, with no need to counter curses with more curses or such at all.
