What To Do When Bringing A New Buddhist Image Home?

Question: After purchasing a Buddha image from a shop, is there any practice that can be done on the way home?

Answer: When on transport, hold the image in your hands and practise mindfulness of Buddha’s name (念佛) sincerely, even if just in the mind, all the way until home is reached.

This ensures there are no unwelcomed unseen beings attached, while also consecrating the image. This can be (further) done after placement of the image on the home shrine too.

Another thing you can also do is to keep a Śūraṅgama Mantra (楞严咒) pendant in contact with the image throughout the trip, as that in contact with the mantra will not have potentially disturbing unseen beings within.
