Should I Use Chanting To Fall Asleep?

Question: Can I use a chanting track with a Buddha’s name, such as that of ‘Āmítuófó’ (阿弥陀佛) for listening to help me sleep?

Answer: You should not use chanting as a lullaby to taper away your mindfulness. You should use mindfulness of Buddha to increase mindfulness instead. If not, when there is support-chanting for you when dying, you might fall asleep.

What you should do if you cannot sleep is to still do your best, even if lying down, to listen sincerely to the Buddha’s name. Let tiredness set in naturally. This also allows you to create merits instead of having useless stray thoughts before falling asleep. With peace of mind, you will be more restful, even if sleeping less.
