In the past, free chickens might lay fertilised eggs,
which makes eating them
the eating of chickens‘ ‘flesh’ too,
to some extent.
These days, many assume it is morally ‘alright’,
even for veg(etari)ans to eat factory farm eggs,
as they are not fertilised,
which means they have no life at all.
But if eggs are purposely not fertilised,
this means chickens are gender-separated,
trapped and exploited, forced to keep laying eggs,
before they are killed for their flesh.
Even so-called ‘cage-free’ chickens,
only have slightly bigger prisons,
and do not get to retire,
as they will be slaughtered too.
If female chickens (hens) are yet to be killed,
this means they are still forced to lay eggs unnaturally,
with some fertilised to breed hens to replace them,
while ‘excess’ male chicks are ground up as chicken feed.
How can it be morally right then,
for anyone, veg(etari)an or not,
to support the egg (and chicken) trade,
by eating even one egg?
