Spoiler here… Sometimes, most unexpectedly, the victim is the (self-)victimiser, who craves to be the centre of attention, while trying to demonise others with pent-up anger and jealousy. Such is the case in this true story, of a (self-)poison pen writer.
For those yet to be caught, as more become enlightened and thus omniscient, the truth will be revealed, even if not admitted. Even with that done unknown by others, the law of karma runs on relentlessly, to bear bitter fruits, to be eaten by oneself.
Thus, those with evils not disclosed and repented for will fare worse. No atonement now means more retribution later, with slanderers falling into the tongue-pulling hell, and the Uninterrupted Hell for especially heinous ones.
There is also the ‘reverse’ (i.e. usual) case of poison pen letters, that speak ills of seemingly everyone in a group falsely. This was done overboard though, when it became obvious that there is only one person not spoken ill of.
That person, being far from perfect, naturally becomes the key suspect of being the slanderer. Much groundless slander of others becomes much ground for blame of oneself. Those who incriminate others wrongly incriminate themselves rightly.
Thus, as taught by the Buddha in the Dhammapada’s Verse 50, (as translated by Acharya Buddharakkhita),
‘Let none find fault with others;
let none see the omissions and commissions of others.
But let one see one’s own acts,
done and undone.’
