‘The Exorcist: Believer’ In True (Neglected) Evil

Before any scary scene, the protagonist girl says something terrifying to her father at breakfast, ‘I’m not eating meat anymore. Poor little piggies. I mean, think about it. You’re just enjoying your day chilling in a mud bath, and then… (makes a buzzing sound, while jabbing her neck, with eyes wide open and teeth clenched). And then… (makes a slashing sound). All ’cause some farmer got sick of eating oatmeal.’

Ironically, before any supernatural jump scare and such, what mentioned is already an everyday ongoing terror in slaughterhouses, that is unnaturally forgotten, or rather repeatedly ignored in bad faith. This is further proven when the father dismisses her vivid description with his cavalier attitude. This evil matter of ultimate animal abuse is not brought up again, yet it should haunt all viewers

Is daily support of the meat industry with our choices not inhumane… even demonic? If the girl’s words ring true, should we not exorcise our delusion greed for sentient beings’ flesh and produce? If animal sacrifices for devils are downright wicked, why are they alright if for humans, who have so many more kinder choices for food and drink? What makes more sense for realising our Buddha-nature?

Though not adding Buddhism into the mix, the story suggests that it takes a combination of exorcism rituals of various faiths to rid evil. However, in the Buddhist view, the singular practice of sincere mindfulness of Buddha (Āmítuófó) will end possession. Then again, there would be not enough drama to portray. With faith in one another’s Buddha-nature and the Buddha’s blessings, we will be able to save all!
