昔有一人骑一黑马入阵击贼,以其怖故不能战鬪,便以血污涂其面目,诈现死相卧死人中,其所乘马为他所夺。
In the past, there was a person riding a black horse, entering a formation to attack thieves. With him being terrified, thus not able to fight, then with blood smearing his face, he pretended to appear with death’s appearance, lying down within dead persons. His that horse rode upon was by another that taken by force.
军众既去便欲还家,即截他人白马尾来,既到舍已有人问言:「汝所乘马今为所在,何以不乘?」
With the soldiers already gone, he then desired to return home, then cutting off another person’s white horse’s tail and returning. Thereupon, having arrived home already, there was a person who asked, saying, ‘Of your that horse rode upon, where is it now? Why are you not riding it?’
答言:「我马已死,遂持尾来。」
He replied, saying, ‘My horse has already died, thereupon, holding his tail and returning.’
傍人语言:「汝马本黑,尾何以白?」
Bystanders said, ‘As your horse was originally black, how is the tail white?’
默然无对,为人所笑。
Silent without a reply, he was by people that laughed at.
世间之人亦复如是,自言善好修行慈心不食酒肉,然杀害众生加诸楚毒,妄自称善无恶不造,如彼愚人诈言马死。
People of the world are likewise thus, personally saying they are good and fond of cultivating practices, with the compassionate mind not drinking wine and eating meat, however killing and harming sentient beings, in addition, with all kinds of cruel torture. Falsely personally calling themselves to be good, without evils not created, they are like that foolish person lying about his horse’s death.
[Note: Both monastics and laypersons should be true to themselves and everyone else. There should be congruence and consistency, with their external wholesome appearances (i.e. words and deeds) and good practices matching their internal pure motivations. Otherwise, their ongoing deceit to cover up evils done will only create more evil karmas (恶业) that lead to more suffering, later in this life and in later lives.]
