A ‘monk’ (acted by a non-monk) wrongly explains to a man that when born, we are like ‘drops of water’ going upwards, separated from ‘oceanlike consciousness’, and that we descend back when we die, to become one with the ocean, with no more separation and suffering. Thus, death is like a ‘happy return, coming home’. [sic]
There are many errors in this analogy. Due to attachment to self in previous lives, we were already like ‘drops of water’ before; not from one ‘ocean’. And still due to attachment after death, we will still be like ‘drops of water’, without ‘return to the ocean’. Describing death as happy by default (without any spiritual cultivation) is dangerous, suggesting death to be liberation, somewhat ‘encouraging’ suicide when it can have truly hellish effects of even greater and prolonged suffering.
What extra disturbing is that the ‘monk’ was portrayed to be wise, and the man seemed to be respectful and receptive. Never ever attempt to learn the Right Dharma via that ‘creatively’ scripted mainly for entertainment. There is usually, unfortunately, lack of proper research and portrayal. Even if with good intentions, what depicted are usually stereotypical, overly-romanticised and thus wrong ideas.
