昔有一人,共他相嗔,愁忧不乐。
In the past, there was a person, together with another person, angry at each other, worried, anxious and unhappy.
有人问言:「汝今何故愁悴如是?」
There was a person who asked, saying, ‘You are now for what reason distressed and haggard thus?’
即答之言:「有人毁我力不能报,不知何方可得报之,是以愁耳。」
Then replying him, saying, ‘There is a person who slandered me. With my power, I am not able to retaliate. Not knowing with what method can I get revenge for this, I am with this anxious only.’
有人语言:「唯有毗陀罗呪可以害彼,但有一患,未及害彼返自害己。」
There was a person who said, ‘There is only the Vetāla Mantra that can be used to harm that person. There is only one danger. Yet to have time to harm that person, it instead harms oneself first.’
[Note 1: This so-called mantra is supposed to be able to reanimate a corpse with a ghost to kill people, but often kills the one chanting the mantra first. Those who use it thus might not even get to harm others later.]
其人闻已便大欢喜:「愿但教我,虽当自害要望伤彼。」
That person, having heard this already, then had great joy, ‘I wish, however, that you will teach it to me. Although I will personally be harmed, I hope to hurt that person.’
世间之人亦复如是,为瞋恚故欲求毗陀罗呪,用恼于彼竟未害他,先为瞋恚反自恼害,堕于地狱畜生饿鬼,如彼愚人等无差别。
People of the world are likewise thus, because of anger thus, desiring seeking of the Vetāla Mantra, to use it with hatred on others, in the end yet to harm others, first because of anger, instead personally by hatred harmed, falling to be hell-beings, animals and hungry ghosts, they are like that foolish person, equally without difference.
[Note 2: With or without the so-called mantra, with or without harming others, those nursing hatred in the moment are already harming themselves, depriving themselves from peace of mind. If they die while harbouring hatred, and especially if they did harm others gravely too, they will karmically fall into the lower realms in their future lives. If there is hatred and/or retaliation from the one harmed, the above principles also apply to that person.]
