Neither Dirty Things Nor Good Brothers

With strong attachment living,
one is like a human hungry ghost now.

With strong aversion living,
one is like a human hell-being now.

With strong delusion living,
one is like a human animal now.

May we stop calling ghosts (鬼)
as ‘one or two (一只或两只) dirty things’ (肮脏的东西),
with utter disgust and disdain.
Where is our compassion and empathy?

They are also sentient beings,
suffering from much deluded aversion,
thus frightening at times.
Our belittling defiled emotions are too cruel.

May we stop calling ghosts
as ’good brothers’ (好兄弟) too,
with sheer fear and flattery.
Where is our calmness and clarity?

They are also sentient beings,
suffering from much deluded attachment,
thus desperate at times.
Our bootlicking fretful sentiments are too patronising.

With strong attachment reborn,
one becomes an actual hungry ghost then.

With strong aversion reborn,
one becomes an actual hell-being then.

With strong delusion reborn,
one becomes an actual animal then.
