Question: A medium seems able to speak about some personal past experiences accurately. Does this make the advice that follows trustworthy?
Answer: This alone offers no guarantee as some so-called ‘mediums’ have ‘whispering’ assistant ghosts or gods (鬼神) feeding them information. They have the supernormal power to read the minds (他心通) of those seeking advice, thus able to recall our experiences. (Buddhas and Buddhas do not possess mediums.)
Especially without the Dharma, just because someone unenlightened can read our history well does not mean s/he can best advise on what best to do in the present, or predict how our future will be. Why pay for someone to tell you what you already know? Buddhists should learn and practise the Buddha’s teachings directly instead.
