Question: A friend says he is used to living with the presence of ghosts at home. Is this form of ‘making peace’ advisable?
Answer: It is not advisable because living in the midst of ghostly beings will lead to ill health (and shortened life) sooner or later due to the clashing of opposite energies.
Also, if he is used to ghosts in the sense of making do with them, even in day and night, to the extent of living together, with this becoming a lifelong habit, he will be likely to die surrounded by them.
He might be ‘forced’ by default to be mindful of ghost(s) and be tricked by them when dying. With this subject of mindfulness (i.e. ghost/s) as the last thought before taking rebirth, it will lead him to join them, to be reborn as a ghost too.
Thus, he should learn and practise mindfulness of Buddha (念佛) to protect himself. He should also offer guidance (开示) and support-chanting (助念) to encourage the ghosts to also be sincerely mindful of the Buddha (阿弥陀佛: Āmítuófó), so as to reach his Pure Land (净土) for peace, bliss (安乐) and liberation (解脱) too.
