Those with great greed become hungry ghosts.
Those with great hatred become hell-beings.
Those with great delusion become animals.
Of the Ten Unwholesome Karmic Paths,
the most severe are causes for the hells,
the average degrees are causes for the animals,
and the least severe are causes for the hungry ghosts.
Among them, the offense of [1] killing can cause living beings to fall to the hells, animals, and hungry ghosts.
If they are born among people, they have two kinds of retribution:
[i] one, a short life;
[ii] two, many illnesses.
The offense of [2] stealing
also causes living beings to fall into the three evil paths.
If they are born among people, they have two kinds of retribution:
[i] one, they are poor;
[ii] two, their wealth is held in common, and they do not have free use of it.
The offense of [3] sexual misconduct
also causes living beings to fall into the three evil paths.
If they are born among people, they have two kinds of retribution:
[i] one, their wives [and husbands] will not be good or faithful;
[ii] two, they will not have a retinue that accords with their intent.
The offense of [4] lying
also causes living beings to fall into the three evil paths.
If they are born among people, they have two kinds of retribution:
[i] one, they will be slandered a lot;
[ii] two, they will be deceived by others.
The offense of [5] double tongue
also causes living beings to fall into the three evil paths.
If they are born among people, they have two kinds of retribution:
[i] one, their retinue will be separated;
[ii] two, their caste will be base.
The offense of [6] harsh speech
also causes living beings to fall into the three evil paths.
If they are born among people, they have two kinds of retribution:
[i] one, they will always hear disagreeable sounds;
[ii] two, they will be involved in many lawsuits.
The offense of [7] loose speech
also causes living beings to fall into the three evil paths.
If they are born among people, they have two kinds of retribution:
[i] one, people will not accept what they say;
[ii] two, their speech will not be clearly understood.
The offense of [8] greed and desire
also causes living beings to fall into the three evil paths.
If they are born among people, they have two kinds of retribution:
[i] one, their minds will never know contentment;
[ii] two, they will have much desire which will never be satisfied.
The offense of [9] anger and hatred
also causes living beings to fall into the three evil paths.
If they are born among people, they have two kinds of retribution:
[i] one, other people will always find fault with them;
[ii] two, they will constantly be troubled and harmed by others.
The offense of [10] deviant views
also causes living beings to fall into the three evil paths.
If they are born among people, they have two kinds of retribution:
[i] one, they will be born in a family holding deviant views;
[ii] two, their minds will be flattering and crooked.
