Can A Sutra Be A Lullaby?

Question: I use a melodious and soothing Heart Sutra chant as a lullaby for my baby’s naps. Is this okay? Will I cultivate the wrong habit of becoming sleepy when the sutra is chanted?

Answer: You are right that sutras are actually for waking us up spiritually! This would include physical wakefulness. What you can do is also chant the sutra when wide awake, and in the presence of your baby too – to prevent the sutra ‘becoming’ a mere sleep-inducing tune for both of you. This should keep it balanced.
